Strategy That Sticks
Strategy isn’t just about having a document – it’s about asking the right questions, challenging assumptions, and getting clear on where you want to go and how you’ll get there.
We’ve recently had the opportunity to run strategy sessions with organisations such as Hull Museums & Galleries, Leeds Minster, SPARK, and VCSE organisations in Wakefield. These sessions are always a privilege to lead: each one is unique, and each begins with honest conversations about what’s working now, what’s not, and what success really looks like.
We typically start by looking at the current vision and mission. Are they still relevant? Do they reflect what the organisation is really aiming for? Then we ask: what do you do now – and what would you do in an ideal world? This helps shape a gap analysis between current and future ambitions.
We also take stock of the current resources and structure versus what’s required to meet those aspirations. Do you have the right people, funding, systems, and support in place? If not, what would it take?
A good strategy also considers who’s at the table – and who needs to be. Through stakeholder mapping and community analysis, we identify key voices and sources of support. Alongside this, we use tools like SWOT analysis to examine internal and external factors affecting your ability to grow or deliver.
From there, we dig into the main challenges, clarify priorities, and return to that initial mission and vision – refining or reaffirming them as needed, now with real alignment behind them.
And always, we approach this work in partnership. At Good Fundraising, we don’t do cookie-cutter strategies. We work closely with our clients to co-create living, breathing documents that reflect their values and aspirations – and serve as practical tools, not just shelf-fillers.
As a recent example, we were delighted to join the congregation at Leeds Minster for a “bring and share” lunch, followed by a fundraising strategy session led by our brilliant colleagues Cath L. and Cath S. Sessions like these reflect what we believe in: a collaborative, tailored approach to strategy that makes space for everyone’s voice.
Whether you’re a small team looking to grow or a larger organisation needing a reset, a thoughtful strategy process can provide the clarity and confidence to move forward with purpose.
